Bert Blyleven and Roberto Alomar elected to Hall of Fame

Baseball's Hall of Fame grew by two members today as Roberto Alomar and Bert Blyleven were elected with 90 and 79.7% vote respectively (75% needed for election).  Alomar gets the nod in his 2nd year on the ballot and Blyleven in his 14th.  Many believe the baseball writers punished Alomar by not voting him in last year because of an incident in 1996 where he spat on umpire Jim Hirschbeck and for absolutely crushing Mets fans.  Blyleven made it in his 2nd to last year on the ballot mainly due to an increased awareness by sabermetricians who have new ways to evaluate baseball numbers.  The more telling story of the vote was how little support PED users Mark Mcgwire, Rafael Palmeiro, and Juan Gonzalez received.  Also telling was the diminishing support Jeff Bagwell received even though he has never been linked to PEDs.  It seems baseball writers and fans are still unsure how to fully assess the big numbers put up during the steroid era.
