The Perpetual Myth: The Big East is the dominant basketball conference

We've heard it again and again that the Big East is the top basketball conference in the country.  After all they sent a record 11 teams to the NCAA tournament.  At KSO we decided to look a little deeper into the stats instead of blindly hyping the Big East like many in the media tend to do.

-The Big East is the largest conference with 16 teams, the SEC for comparison has 12 teams.  So just based on percentages, if the SEC sent 6 teams to the Big Dance that would be equivalent to 8 teams from the Big East.

-The Big East has won an impressive 10 national titles.  Actually the SEC has also won 10 national titles.  And if you consider that Louisvilles two national titles were won before they joined the conference, the Big East only has 8 national titles.  Duke and UNC from the ACC have a combined 9 national titles beating out the Big East by themselves.  I guess its not that impressive after all.

-OK so historically the Big East is not that good, but lately they have dominated right?  Not really.  In the last 6 NCAA tournaments the Big East has not won a single title, in fact they have not even made it to the final game.  They have only had 4 teams make the final 4 in the last 6 years.  For comparison the SEC has won 2 titles and the ACC 3 titles in the past 6 years.

So next time someone tells you the Big East is the best basketball conference you can mock them for their ignorance.  The truth is that the Big East is loaded with mediocre teams but no team has been dominant.  Big East programs start the year off well due to cake-walk non conference schedules, so many teams are ranked when conference play starts.  Then when teams start loosing people say "Well they lost to a ranked team" and "Anyone would loose games going through the Big East gauntlet", and they somehow remain ranked.  Charles Barkley said it best when he told Rick Pitino that the Big East should be renamed the Itty Bitty East.

  1. Your "statistical analysis" is overwhelming. Yes, the Big East underachieved in this years tournament, very much so, although it should be mentioned that two of its teams beat their own. And they have struggled to achieve the apex of the sport in terms of titles, but year in and year out, as is statistically proven,
they outperform each other major conference in head to head play. I'll stop bashing though, as you deserve a Nobel prize in math for concluding that the BE is bigger than the SEC, and thus proportional, even though your numbers were irrelevant, because the BE had 11 teams in, and the SEC 5. That's what I would expect from a site as poor as this, in terms of content and grammar. Leave the "statistical analysis" to those who are willing to provide "statistics."
