Tubby Smith rumored to Arkansas and N.C. State
The Tubby Smith-is-leaving-Minnesota speculation is starting again, earlier today to Arkansas and now to North Carolina State.
"Arkansas has already had face-to-face contact with and is close to hiring (Smith)," the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Monday, citing an unnamed source.
Later in the day SportsbyBrooks confirmed that Sidney Lowe had been fired and a search firm hired to find their next coach. The article states that from talking to several sources the past week, including one inside the N.C. State athletic department, I can confirm that - at least at the moment - the top choices for the job are Rick Barnes, Sean Miller, Tubby Smith and Mark Fox.
The Associated Press then released a statement late tonight from Tubby Smith saying he expects to be back at Minnesota next season. The coach said he is continuing to work on a two-year extension with athletic director Joel Maturi. Smith has wanted a new practice facility ever since he arrived in 2007, but the school has not been able to raise the necessary funds to make that happen yet.
Every year you hear rumors about Tubby Smith to somewhere and every year it's usually just more fodder for Tubby to push for an extension.
