Papa John's Brings the News, Views, and Free Pizza!
When you think back to the Super Bowl this past Sunday what do you remember as being the best part? The Giants win? The half-time show with Madonna? The prohibition era Budweiser commercials? For me, the best part was...of course...the COIN TOSS! I didn't care about either team, the half-time show was decent, and the commercials were so-so. The coin landing on heads though was amazing because it meant a free 1-topping pizza and 2-Liter of Pepsi Max for all Papa John's Reward Zone members that had signed up prior to Sunday evening. Although there was a delay yesterday in Papa John's getting the e-mails out, they finally were sent last night. If you are a Papa John's Reward Zone Member go get the e-mail...like now...er I mean after you finish reading this post since UK basketball news is always better than free pizza right?
The notes:
-As everyone not living under a rock knows by now, UK is THE number 1 team in America. Nobody knows this better than the recent teams we have dismantled like South Carolina. The first time we made #1 earlier in the season I did not think we were really deserving of that position since we really were not playing on that level yet. Indiana quickly hammered home that point for us. When Syracuse first fell giving us the spot again I still had my doubts but by now it is becoming clear that UK is truly taking care of business and playing like an elite team. When we play like we did against South Carolina, we have a great shot at finally getting the elusive eighth banner home to Rupp. The only issue that still concerns me is depth. Yes we 'start' 6 players with Miller and Lamb interchangeable and Wiltjer is greatly improving coming in as the 7th man but to bring home number eight we need all of our players to keep up the intensity for the remaining games since as we all know, we aren't deep.
-Shaquille O'Neal can't be too happy right now since his records on being broken and surpassed lately. Against South Carolina, Davis tied and passed Shaq's 115 SEC season blocks for a freshman record. Last night Kobe Bryant passed Shaq and took over the number 5 spot on the NBA all-time scoring record. Despite this, and the fact he played for LSU, we still know Shaq's a beast.
-While Davis himself has a nice block streak going, UK overall has a few nice streaks. First is UK's home game winning streak (48 games)going back to one game before Calipari. UK is undefeated at Rupp with Calipari at the helm and holds the longest current undefeated home record. The team that was in second place which was Duke fell out of the race when FSU beat them at home this season. Another, less talked about streak, is UK's streak of games with a made 3-pointer. While we don't hold the top stop for this since UNLV and Vandy are ahead of us, we fall into third place with somewhere around 812-821 (depending on source) straight games with a made three pointer. This streak came dangerously close to being ended when UT came to Rupp last week and Lamb scored our only three pointer the entire game.
-The UK women hoops team (21-3)had a nice SEC streak going and more importantly have been destroying other teams streaks such as UT's SEC winning streak and Georgia's home game winning streak. Unfortunately, the women's undefeated SEC record was ended Sunday at LSU. The women slipped a little in the ranking to the #7 spot but still sit atop the SEC at 10-1, 2 wins ahead of second place UT at 8-2
-If you hadn't heard, Darius Miller was nominated for having the 'Dunk of the Year' for his dunk against St. John's on Dec. 1. According to UKathletics.com, voting has set to end yesterday with voting occuring on Facebook. The winner will be announced March 26 on ESPN2. UPDATE: The 'Dunk of the Year' contest chooses someone each week to go on to the next round of the competition. Darius received enough votes to go onto the next round but this week MKG is on the list. Be sure to head on over to the 'Dunks of the Year' page on Facebook and vote for MKG!
-Catch UK vs Florida tonight @ 7:00 PM EST on ESPN for TV watchers or 98.1 FM WBUL / 630 AM WLAP for the radio listeners!
