UK Hoops Looking To Rebound Against Alabama Tonight
While UK men's basketball gets A LOT of attention, as it should, the UK women's hoops team has gotten some attention this year too and it is very much deserved. Matthew Mitchell has done a fantastic job at his time at UK so far and brought the women quite a bit of attention. His squad is managing to even get Memorial Colosseum packed for some of their games.
As of the first week of February the UK hoops team had the SEC conference title locked up with a perfect record and even a win over UT in Lexington. Last week though, the women hit a very rough time when they were upset by unranked LSU at LSU. After this loss they had a week to recover but had to go down to Knoxville this week and take on UT at home. I, as well many fans I am sure, felt the women were going into a tough, but winnable game especially with them having a week off. Unfortunately what happened though was UT utterly dominating UK and making us look like an inexperienced, unranked team and nothing like the team that normally plays great defense and forces numerous turnovers. Tennessee was absolutely on fire.
Thompson-Boling Arena looked as packed for that game as any men's game. The fans and players were crazy and the place was rocking. You could see in the eyes of the UT players that they were determined to absolutely destroy UK and get revenge and that is exactly what they did. I don't think UT could have played any better and us any worse.
The only good point after walking away from that horrible loss for Mitchell's squad is that they are still 1 game ahead of UT in the SEC. Even with the two loses last week, UK retains a one game lead on the SEC at 10-2. With four games left for UK and UT, as long as the UK Hoops team wins out the rest of their games, we will take the SEC conference title. The question becomes, how likely is that. Our four remaining games are at Alabama, vs. South Carolina, vs. Vanderbilt, and at Mississippi State. Bama is bottom of the SEC so should be a nice rebound win for us tonight. Vandy and SC are both ranked in either the AP or ESPN rankings. Vandy has wins against ranked Georgia and UT. SC has two wins against Vandy and against UT at Knoxville. These games should be tough but winnable especially since we already have a win against SC at SC. Mississippi State should be a easy win to finish out the season.
Here's to hoping Mitchell's squad shakes off whatever funk they had last week and go full speed ahead the rest of the season.
