What seemed likely was made official on Monday when Coach Joker Phillips named sophomore Maxwell Smith Kentucky’s starting quarterback for the opener at Louisville on Sept. 2. As a freshman, Smith played in eight games last season, starting three. Smith finished last season throwing for 819 yards and four touchdowns, completing 84 of 153 passes.
In an interview with the Herald-Leader this summer, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Randy Sanders said Smith played well under difficult circumstances.
“We just had to throw him out there to the wolves a little bit, and he did some things very well and he did some things like a freshman,” Sanders said. “I expect him to be much better. He had a really good spring and I expect he’ll keep making improvement.”
